What is a matcha bowl used for?
A matcha bowl, known as a Chawan in a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, is a type of tea bowl in which matcha is prepared. The Chawan was originally used in China but has been used in tea ceremonies in Japan since the 13th century.
There are many different styles, sizes, and shapes of matcha bowls available depending on the specific ceremony and the type of tea used. Typically, in the winter months, deeper matcha bowls are used so that you can enjoy larger quantities of tea, whereas, in the summer, the bowls tend to be shallower.
Most matcha bowls are around 5 inches in diameter, are smooth to touch, and easy to drink from so that you can enjoy your chosen matcha powder in the best possible way.
If you have been drinking your matcha green tea from a regular bowl or even a soup bowl, you will be surprised at just how much more enjoyable the tea-drinking experience can be when you use a traditional matcha tea bowl.
Our high-quality Japanese matcha tea bowls are all handmade and come in a wide range of beautiful designs and colors, so you are guaranteed to find the perfect one for your home.
What makes a good matcha bowl?
A matcha bowl is one of the most important elements of making matcha, so you need to make sure you pick a high-quality one. Also known as a Chawan, a matcha bowl should be around 5 inches or 12.7cm in diameter and around 3.5 inches or 8.9cm tall. The inside of the bowl should have rounded edges that swoop down so that you can sip your tea with ease, and it should be flat bottomed, so there is plenty of room for the matcha whisk to move around.
Although this may sound very similar to lots of regular tea bowls, a good matcha bowl is specifically designed to enhance both the act of drinking matcha and the taste of the tea itself. Plus, you will never get the lovely frothy top on your matcha without the use of both a matcha bowl and a matcha whisk.
Do you need a specific bowl for matcha?
While you can make matcha in a regular bowl, if you really want to enjoy an authentic matcha experience and make the most of the green matcha powder you have bought, then you need to invest in a matcha tea bowl.
An authentic Japanese matcha bowl is designed so that you can whisk your matcha with ease and enjoy a clump-free and frothy bowl of green matcha tea. Our selection of matcha bowls that are handcrafted in Japan are both pretty and practical, so you can enjoy the ultimate matcha experience.
How to prepare matcha
While it can take years of dedication and practice to master the art of preparing matcha and to perform the perfect Japanese tea ceremony, with the right tools, you can create a very similar tea-drinking experience.
- To start, sift 1-2 tsp of matcha powder into your matcha bowl. This will help to prevent clumping.
- Pour in a small amount of hot water.
- Vigorously whisk from side to side using a matcha whisk.
- Do not whisk in circular motions, as you will not get the desired foam.
- Finish your matcha tea with either more hot water or steamed milk.
- Whisk again for even more foam and sweeten to taste.
Traditionally, matcha green tea is made with just matcha powder and water, but you can easily make it into a matcha latte with the addition of steamed milk. Alternatively, if you have special dietary requirements, you can use almond milk, coconut milk, or even oak milk.
