A unique recipe that has quickly become one of our favorites is this delightful combination of two teas. Earl Grey is a beloved choice when it comes to black tea, thanks to its unique citrusy bergamot notes that bring together a refreshing yet comforting flavor. Matcha, with its earthy, vegetal notes, pairs beautifully with Earl Grey’s bright citrus flavor, making for a delicious and unexpected combination. If you’re a tea enthusiast with a variety of teas in your collection, this is a wonderful place to start. We have a quick recipe for you to try!

Earl Grey Matcha Latte (London Fog Style)

Ingredients

  • 1 Earl Grey tea bag (or 1 tsp loose leaf)
  • 60 milliliters boiling water, for Earl Grey
  • 1 teaspoon ceremonial-grade matcha powder
  • 60 milliliters hot water (80°C/175°F), for matcha
  • 200 milliliters oat milk (or milk of choice)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or honey, to taste
  • 1 cup ice, if serving iced

Directions

    Brew the Earl Grey Concentrate

    1. Steep 1 Earl Grey tea bag (or 1 tsp loose leaf) in 60 milliliters of boiling water for 3 to 4 minutes. 4 minutes to make a strong concentrate.

    2. Remove the tea bag, then stir in 1 tablespoon maple syrup, simple syrup, or honey, to taste. This is your flavor base; don't skip letting it steep the full time or the bergamot won't come through.

    Whisk the Matcha

    1. While the tea steeps, sift 1 teaspoon ceremonial-grade matcha powder into a small bowl to remove clumps.

    2. Add 60 ml hot water (80°C/175°F) and whisk briskly in a zig-zag or 'W' motion for about 15-20 seconds with a bamboo whisk, until smooth and lightly frothy with no lumps.

    Build the Base

    1. If serving iced: Fill a tall glass with 1 cup of ice, pour in the Earl Grey concentrate, then top with 200 milliliters oat milk (or milk of choice).

    2. If serving hot: Warm 200 ml oat milk (or alternative milk of choice) gently in a saucepan and pour it into a mug with the Earl Grey concentrate.

    Float the Matcha on Top

    1. Slowly pour the whisked matcha over the back of a spoon on top of the drink. This keeps the matcha floating as a distinct top layer instead of mixing straight through, giving you that classic two-tone look.

    Stir and Serve

    1. Give it a gentle stir just before drinking to bring the layers together. Best enjoyed slowly.

    2. Optional: Want it more London-Fog and less matcha-forward? A drop of vanilla extract or vanilla simple syrup in the Earl Grey base leans it that direction without changing the method.

Pair Your Latte With a Treat

    1. We love a good tea time, and a drink this flavorful deserves a few snacks to go along with it. Since the Earl Grey Matcha Latte brings together bright citrusy notes, earthy matcha, and creamy sweetness, there are plenty of treats that pair nicely with it without overpowering the tea. Here are a few of our favorite options!

    2. Lemon or yuzu loaf cake: Doubles down on the citrus note from the bergamot for a brighter, more dessert-forward pairing.

    3. Brown butter financier or madeleine: A lovely French bakery pairing, with its rich, toasty butter flavor complementing the bright citrus notes of Earl Grey. The soft texture also makes it a wonderful little treat to enjoy alongside your latte.

    4. Everything bagel with whipped cream cheese: An unexpected but delicious pairing, with the savory, salty flavor of the bagel and creamy cheese adding a nice contrast to the latte’s floral and earthy sweetness.
