Summer is just around the corner, and as the temperatures rise, there's nothing better than a cool, refreshing drink to keep you feeling fresh and energized! This zesty and umami-rich Matcha Basil Lemonade is one of our absolute favorite drinks, perfect for a warm afternoon or a laid-back summer brunch with friends. Also, it's packed with antioxidants and natural energy, making it a healthier alternative to sugary lemonades. Let's dive in!

Recipe

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • 1 ½ cups cold water
  • 2 tsp café-grade matcha
  • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves (about 5-6 leaves)
  • 2 tbsp fresh lemon juice (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup (adjust for sweetness)
  • 2-3 tbsp lukewarm water (about 80°C / 175°F)
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices & basil leaves for garnish

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Basil Syrup

  • Muddle fresh basil leaves with honey (or maple syrup) in a small bowl to release the flavor and aroma. If you don't have a muddler, you can use the back of a spoon to lightly press the leaves against the bowl.
  • Add ¼ cup of warm water, stirring until everything is well combined. Let it sit for about 5 minutes to infuse.

Step 2: Strain the Basil Syrup

To keep the drink smooth, strain the basil mixture through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher, removing any solid bits.

Step 3: Whisk the Matcha

  • Sift 2 tsp of matcha powder into a bowl to prevent clumps.
  • Add 2-3 tbsp of lukewarm water (about 80°C / 175°F) and whisk using a bamboo whisk (chasen) or an electric frother until smooth and slightly frothy.

Step 4: Mix It All Together

Combine the strained basil syrup, whisked matcha mixture, fresh lemon juice, and cold water in the pitcher. Stir well to blend the flavors. Adjust sweetness and lemon to taste preferences.

Step 5: Serve & Enjoy

Fill glasses with ice and pour in the beautiful matcha basil lemonade. Garnish with lemon slices or lemon wheels and a few basil leaves for a refreshing touch.

Tips & Variations

  • For a sparkling version – Swap some of the cold water with sparkling water for a fizzy twist.
  • For a frozen version – Blend the ingredients with ice for a slushy-style treat.
